Caribbean Childhoods: 'Outside', 'Adopted' or 'Left Behind'
Price
60.40 BBD

Studies of the experience of Caribbean childhood have, in the past, been undertaken almost exclusively from the perspective of adults rather than that of the children themselves. In this work, Christine Barrow departs from that tradition by focusing on the views of children as participants. The result is a fresh perspective on childhood and growing up that is different from those of parents, guardians and adults in general. The core of the study is based on the childhood narratives of some 28 men and women organised around a range of themes including migration, informal adoption and abandonment.

"Studies of the experience of Caribbean childhood have, in the past, been undertaken almost exclusively from the perspective of adults rather than that of the children themselves. In this work, Christine Barrow departs from that tradition by focusing on the views of children as participants. The result is a fresh perspective on childhood and growing up that is different from those of parents, guardians and adults in general. The core of the study is based on the childhood narratives of 28 men and women organised around a range of themes including migration, informal adoption and abandonment. These narratives provide fresh insights into the complex lives of children as well as alternative views of commonly accepted notions such as the two-parent family being the ideal, in comparison to the reality of families not purely formed by blood relation. Caribbean Childhoods adds a new dimension to our understanding of the rich diversity of Caribbean families and the context in which many children are raised. It is a useful guide for social workers, teachers and anyone else seeking to understand Caribbean youth. "

Challenging HIV & AIDS: A New Role for Education

Challenging HIV & AIDS: A New Role for Education
Price
88.50 BBD

There are an estimated 42 million people worldwide living with HIV and AIDS. In the Caribbean, the statistics are alarming. After sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean has a higher HIV prevalence than any other area of the world. The need to control the spread of HIV is critical. Though medical advances have been successful in slowing the progress of the disease, there remains no cure for HIV and AIDS. In Challenging HIV and AIDS, the contributors, players at various levels in the education sector across the Caribbean, weigh in on the value of education as a means to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS. The contributions are unique to the Caribbean experience and culture and address the root causes of the spread of the epidemic. Reducing ignorance and the accompanying stigma and discrimination as well as addressing issues of sexuality through Health and Family Life Education in schools are identified as effective programmes in addressing the epidemic.

Children's Rights

Children's Rights
Price
86.55 BBD

It is widely accepted that the children of the Caribbean remain virtually unseen and unheard on the region's agenda for development and research. Where children are visible, it is as passive beneficiaries of traditional services in health, education, welfare and the objects of socialisation in preparation for adulthood, rather than as subjects of rights. In recognition of this and drawing on papers presented at a symposium held by the Caribbean Area Office of the United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados, Children's Rights: Caribbean Realities sets out to identify - from a wide range of perspectives: legal, medical, educational, sociological, anthropological and psychological - the major issues in the realisation of child rights and development in the Caribbean region, as dictated by the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each contribution brings a unique and scholarly perspective to longstanding questions relating to children in the cultural context of the Caribbean and examines these issues on the basis of realities within the family setting and at the community and national levels. This book should inspire and engage those who read it to take urgent action to promote the protection of our children within their individual sphere of influence.

Ending Disability Discrimination: Strategies for Social Workers

Ending Disability Discrimination: Strategies for Social Workers
    Price
    151.15 BBD

Ending Disability Discrimination defines disability as a social construction, not as an immutable physical limitation, and gives social work students and practitioners a model that can be used to transform how people with disabilities are treated. Highlights: *Uses an innovative model for understanding disability that draws upon a concept familiar to social work students: discrimination (Chapter 5). *Presents disability-related impairment as a consequence of discrimination, making the target system the social environment rather than the person with the disability; a viewpoint that shows commitment to social justice and draws upon the systems perspective used for understanding other minority groups. *Provides a single source through which to explore the shifting history of scholarly thinking about disability issues by including chapters from respected disability scholars that chronicle and analyze the evolution of the conceptualization of disability (Chapters 1, 2, and 4). Global Child Welfare and Well-Being
    Price
    89.25 BBD

Across the world, children are the most vulnerable population. The threats to them may vary, but wherever one looks, children are endangered and exploited. Susan Mapp examines threats to child well-being globally, investigating violations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in countries both in the Global North and the Global South. Some problems are well known, such as child trafficking and child soldiers, while others are less well known, including unethical adoption practices and fistulas. No other book approaches this vital topic in such a comprehensive yet tightly structured way, using an established, agreed-upon set of principles to show how things stand now, what remains to be accomplished, and examples of how these problems might be resolved. NGOs and government branches must collaborate increasingly with their counterparts from other countries if they are to allow children to achieve their adult potential. This text promises to inform the reader about these issues and offer paths forward to a better future.

Green Social Work : From Environmental Crises to Environmental Justice

Green Social Work : From Environmental Crises to Environmental Justice
    Price
    70.65 BBD

Social work is the profession that claims to intervene to enhance people's well-being. However, social workers have played a low-key role in environmental issues that increasingly impact on people's well-being, both locally and globally.

This compelling new contribution confronts this topic head-on, examining environmental issues from a social work perspective. Lena Dominelli draws attention to the important voice of practitioners working on the ground in the aftermath of environmental disasters, whether these are caused by climate change, industrial accidents or human conflict. The author explores the concept of 'green social work' and its role in using environmental crises to address poverty and other forms of structural inequalities, to obtain more equitable allocations of limited natural resources and to tackle global socio-political forces that have a damaging impact upon the quality of life of poor and marginalized populations at local levels. The resolution of these matters is linked to community initiatives that social workers can engage in to ensure that the quality of life of poor people can be enhanced without costing the Earth.

This important book will appeal to those in the fields of social work, social policy, sociology and human geography. It powerfully reveals how environmental issues are an integral part of social work's remit if it is to retain its currency in the modern world and emphasize its relevance to the social issues that societies have to resolve in the twenty-first century.

In 1979-80 he was a Visiting Fellow at Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford. His non-academic education continues.

He spent more than 30 years in the Public Service, both at home and abroad before retiring in 1991, and is the only person from Trinidad and Tobago to have been Ambassador to Washington (the country's top diplomatic post) and to the Organization of American States, and Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister and Head of the Public Service.

He has been interim Executive Director of the Institute of Business at the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies, and is now a company director and occasional consultant and media commentator.

Uniquely among Caribbean writers, Dumas looks at the region and the world as diplomat, public servant and citizen. He ranges over a wide spectrum of crucial contemporary issues such as public sector reform, illegal drug use and the possible impact of the World Trade Organization. He sheds new light on regional affairs such as the 1983 events in Grenada. His views, often acerbic, always penetrating, are certain to stimulate thought.
