The Caribbean is known more as a tropical paradise than as an area composed of diverse ethnic and political groups, the majority of whom live on the edge of poverty. This set of conceptual and empirical papers focuses on the diversity of ethnic groups in Caribbean families. The essays examine ethnic origins, social structures, family structures, and intellectual, social and clinical problems and their treatment. The issues noted in migration patterns are presented in some detail and there is a description and assessment of different family organizations and childrearing patterns. In documenting Caribbean culture, this volume aims to offer a source of information for broadening the knowledge base of social scientists interested in sociocultural family functioning.

Following this a section exploring Caribbean social theory comprising classic pieces by founding fathers of Caribbean sociology as well essays examining the contribution of Caribbean scholars to the emergence of an indigenous sociology ad social science. Ensuing sections delve into traditional themes such as social stratification, ethnicity, culture and identity, women and gender and education, as well as emerging discussions on domestic violence, child and sexual abuse, labour market conditions, population and demographic change and indigenous African derived religions. The final section deals with the broad area of social change and development which encapsulates the debate on modernisation and development in the region. This Reader is primarily intended for undergraduate sociology students but will prove useful for courses in Caribbean sociology at several different levels.

Changing Societies offers a fresh, timely approach to sociology. Based upon nested theory, the book explains sociology through processes of global and local change--showing how social change occurs in larger global or national structures and influences events that happen in students' immediate personal and social environments. At the same time, Changing Societies emphasizes that social change is a two-way street--that we can influence the world in addition to being affected by it. Racial, ethnic, and gender differences are themes that are woven into every chapter of the book, showing how they affect stratification and inequality, and the workings of particular social institutions and processes. A concluding chapter not only explains agency and social movements, but involves students in activities that help them to think about and plan social action.

City Limits contributes to a growing body of work under the umbrella of 'cultural criminology', which attempts to bring an appreciation of cultural change to an understanding of crime in late modernity (Hayward and Young 2004). Hayward presents an ambitious theoretical analysis that attempts to inspire a 'cultural approach' to understanding the 'crime-city nexus' and, in particular, to re-address 'strain' and the concept of 'relative deprivation' in the context of a culture of consumption.

The book incorporates an impressive array of literature from beyond the boundaries of traditional criminology - including urban studies, social theory and, most strikingly, from art and architectural criticism - illustrating a multidisciplinary approach. This provides for a challenging and enlightening read, with a particularly important emphasis on the impact of consumer culture on the lived urban experience and spatial dynamics of the city and, in turn, for an understanding of transgression and criminality.

Runner-up for the British Society of Criminology Book Prize (2004).

In his Fifth Edition of Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective, author Philip McMichael examines the project of globalization and its instabilities (climate, energy, food, financial crises) through the lens of development and its origins in the colonial project. The book continues to help students make sense of a complex world in transition and explains how globalization became part of public discourse. Filled with case studies, this text makes the intricacies of globalization concrete, meaningful, and clear for students and moves them away from simple social evolutionary views, encouraging them to connect social change, development policies, global inequalities and social movements. The book challenges students to see themselves as global citizens whose consumption decisions have real social and ecological implications.

For thirty-five years and through thirteen editions, Jim Henslin's Down to Earth Sociology has opened new windows onto the social realities that shape our world. Now in its fourteenth edition, the most popular anthology in sociology includes new articles on our changing world while also retaining its classic must-read essays. Focusing on social interaction in everyday life, the forty-six selections bring students face-to-face with the twin projects of contemporary sociology: understanding the individual's experience of society and analyzing social structure.

The fourteenth edition's exceptional new readings include selections on the role of sympathy in everyday life, mistaken perceptions of the American family, the effects of a criminal record on getting a job, and the major social trends affecting our future. Together with these essential new articles, the selections by Peter Berger, Herbert Gans, Erving Goffman, Donna Eder, Zella Luria, C. Wright Mills, Deborah Tannen, Barrie Thorne, Sidney Katz, Philip Zimbardo, and many others provide firsthand reporting that gives students a sense of "being there." Henslin also explains basic methods of social research, providing insight into how sociologists explore the social world. The selections in Down to Earth Sociology highlight the most significant themes of contemporary sociology, ranging from the sociology of gender, power, politics, and religion to the contemporary crises of racial tension, crime, rape, poverty, and homelessness.

In the interest of locating race and ethnicity as sociological and political categories that are inimical to contemporary conceptions of the nation state, editor Anton L. Allahar explores the geopolitics of the Caribbean through a comparative focus. The result is a study that is unique in scope and also in its level of scholarly reflection. This book is the first of its kind. It is essential reading for anyone interested in advancing their analysis of political, economic, social, and cultural thought in the Caribbean and other former colonial modern nations.

"Family in the Caribbean provides a comprehensive review of the extensive literature on family, household and conjugal unions in the Caribbean. The book is constructed around six themes prominent in Caribbean family studies, namely definitions of the family, plural and creole society, social structure, gender roles and relationships, methodology, history and social change. Part I critically assesses theoretical trends and interpretations from the perspectives of African heritage, colonial social welfare, structural functionalism, adaptive responses to poverty and kinship ideology and practice. Concepts such as matrifocality, male marginality, female headed household and kinship network are examined. Part II reviews substantive topics of slave family structure, East Indian family patterns, childhood socialisation and social policy. An added feature is the inclusion of selected readings from works by the main contributors to Caribbean family theory which provide a handy reference for readers. These readings are conveniently placed at the end of each section. The author s objective is to pave the way for future investigations which study Caribbean families in their own right, and in the process help to bury the ethnocentric images of deviant and disorganised families. The Oxford Monographs on Criminal Law and Justice series covers all aspects of criminal law and procedure including criminal evidence. The scope of the series is wide, encompassing both practical and theoretical works.

This volume is a thematic collection of essays on sentencing theory by leading writers. The essays consider several issues affecting the discipline including the underlying justifications for the imposition of punishment by the State, areas of sentencing policy that have given rise to particular difficulty, such as the sentencing of drug offenders, the rationale for discounting sentences for multiple offenders, the existence of special sentencing for young offenders, and cases where the injury done to the victim is of a different magnitude from what might have been expected, and includes various questions about the unequal impact on offenders of different sentencing measures.

This volume is dedicated to Professor Andrew von Hirsch, whose continuing work on sentencing theory provided the stimulus for the collection.

For decades, gangs have been emerging across the globe, disrupting citizen security, the rule of law, health and education, and local economies. The Caribbean, like many other regions, has a significant gang problem. Unfortunately, however, there has been limited academic attention given to the issue. Gangs in the Caribbean is intended to fill this gap by providing sound research conducted by leading Caribbean criminologists that encourages thoughtful and data-driven discussions between researchers and policymakers. The articles range from those that focus on the scope and nature of the Caribbean gang problem, with cutting-edge descriptions of both organized crime groups and street gangs and an analysis of how these differences impact the types of problems that communities face, to those that explore the policies and programmes designed and implemented to respond to Caribbean gangs, as well as what we have learned about such policies and programmes in terms of their effectiveness and unintended consequences. In doing so, Gangs in the Caribbean provides researchers, policymakers and students with a foundation of knowledge on a core issue confronting the Caribbean and provides these readers with a clear roadmap for responding to gangs in the future.
